During the FIFA World Cup in the summer of 2002, held in Korea and Japan, spontaneous celebrations broke out on the streets of major German cities. Apart from a radio report by sports journalist Rolf-Reiner Gecks and the sound of a beer can, “Golden Goal” was composed entirely from the sounds of the streets of Berlin following a match played by the Turkish national team.
