Surround Sound Installation, 34th International Landscape Plein Air “Oder inspiriert” / 30 Years of Unteres Odertal National Park, Kunstverein Schwedt, Galerie im Tabakspeicher
Bird calls, gusts of wind across reed beds, the distant glide of water, the breathing expanse of the river meadows between the banks. More than 60 open-field recordings form the basis of this interactive work. The enveloping sounds were neither curated nor aesthetically processed, but left in their original logic – as fragile acoustic traces of what reveals itself in the moment of listening, and retreats again just as quickly. The installation translates this experience into the exhibition space. Five loudspeakers form a circular listening zone at whose centre the sonic panorama unfolds. The sound fragments are triggered by the movements of visitors and played back in random sequence – a shifting texture of proximity and distance that connects the room with the atmospheric openness of the floodplain landscape. Invasive climbing plants from the national park, hung to dry from the wooden beam ceiling of the historic tobacco warehouse, complete the installation and enrich the multisensory experience with their scent.
