The simple box of pine wood is just the right size to sit on. So plain it could be mistaken for a transport container – and yet this box is a vehicle for an audio journey of moving sound waves and resonating vibrations, evoking distinct images in the mind’s eye and sensations in the body.
For his soundscape “On the Way”, Bodo Hartwig roamed the roads and pathways of Anjwa Island on the back of a pick-up truck, by boat, by bicycle and on foot, discovering and collecting the sounds of island life. The authentic tones and subtle timbres captured in this work carry the listener to a place where a unique natural environment is being forced to adapt to, and make way for, the increasing influence of man. The work encapsulates how the sounds of both merge – giving the island a new voice and sonic identity.
