Singapore gained its independence from colonial rule in the mid-1960s. Since then, barely a stone has been left standing. A city-state in a state of constant growth and perpetual transformation. Little has endured there – apart, perhaps, from the climate: 30 degrees Celsius year-round, with high humidity. The sun rises at 7 in the morning and sets at 7 in the evening. Yet there is something in this business metropolis that genuinely lay in a long sleep for many decades: the only railway line that once led into Singapore is today a long, narrow green corridor running through residential neighbourhoods, high-tech office complexes and residential towers – an area whose future remains uncertain.
